What Afro Hair Products do you Need to Take on Holiday?

It’s that time of the year again when everyone goes abroad to soak up the sun, swim in the sea, lounge on the beach and experience new places.

It’s holiday season.

For most of us, the biggest challenge when it comes to preparing for a holiday is packing our suitcase. Deciding what clothes to bring usually takes up the largest portion of time – but there’s something equally as important:

Our afro hair products.

Given the amount of luggage you can take space is almost always at a premium. Not to mention the fact that whilst you’re on holiday, you won’t be able to visit a salon for a quick fix up!

With this in mind – what afro hair products do you need to take on holiday? Well, sit tight and we’ll answer that for you.

1. Hair Oil – But not Just Any Hair Oil

Depending on how long and where you’re going on holiday, you might not be able to or want to wash your hair regularly.

In hot countries, you will want to keep hair washing to a minimum - at least once per week. Though you might want to remove build up from your hair – which is fine – excessive washing can remove your hair’s natural moisture and cause itchiness. While on the other hand, not washing your hair enough can lead to build up, itchiness and other scalp conditions.

In cold countries, the drier air and temperature can lead to breakage. You’ll also have more tangles, brittleness and hair damage. Instead, you’ll want to protect your hair and keep it moisturised.

Fortunately, there’s a quick and easy solution that doesn’t require washing your hair excessively: hair oil.

In both summer and winter, hail oil can stimulate growth, combat dry scalp and dandruff, prevent damage, add shine and reduce exposure to chemicals and other non-natural ingredients.

It’ll also help to lock in the benefits of your other afro hair products, such as the shampoo and conditioner you use.

Of course, you don’t want to use it often, only after you have moisturised your hair.

Look for hair oil that’s completely natural. That way you can rest assured it doesn’t have any unwanted chemicals in it. You should also look for hair oil that has long-lasting effects, such as our Seal product. It contains coconut and jojoba oil and is designed to lock in moisture in dry, frizzy and curly afro hair.

2. High-Quality Shampoo

OK, so this one is a no-brainer but probably the most important.

The thing is, you might only be on holiday for a week. Or you might be on holiday for a month. Either way, you need a shampoo and conditioner combo that will deliver lasting results.

Why are lasting results important? Because it’s your holiday! You don’t want to be spending half of it looking after your hair because you bought a low-quality afro hair product now, do you?

So, first and foremost, what you need is a sulphate-free shampoo. We know we go on about it but there are so many benefits. They are:

  • Healthier

Sulphate-free shampoos are plant-based – meaning completely natural. No need to worry about dangerous chemicals in your hair.

  • Designed to keep your hair soft

You may be needing to comb your hair on holiday or use heat at times – both of which can damage and dry out your hair. Sulphate-free shampoos will keep your hair soft and not remove any of your scalp’s natural oil (sebum). So they'll help you keep looking great while you’re out and about!

  • Made to promote hair growth and strength

Over time, sulphate-based shampoos can strip your hair of chemicals that help it to stay long, strong and thick. Natural, plant-based shampoos include ingredients that will help your hair flourish and stay stronger for longer.

3. Leave-in Conditioner/Moisturiser

So, after you’ve washed your hair on holiday – what next? Conditioner. To lock in the goodness provided by your plant-based shampoo, you need a good conditioner.

The problem with most conditioners on the market is that they either have unhealthy chemicals – sulphates, ethanolamine – preservatives, or don’t last as long as you need them to!

In truth, a good afro hair moisturiser product will nourish, soften and revive your hair as well as retain moisture. We would recommend you go for a water-based moisturiser as they better penetrate the cuticles of your hair and maintain moisture

The benefit here is that not only is it healthier, but a leave-in variant will also provide maximum moisture retention and can be readily applied to your afro hair on a regular basis. In hot countries, the natural ingredients in your conditioner/moisturiser will also protect your hair from the sun and heat.

For example, shea butter – present in our Smooth natural moisturising cream – will protect your hair and skin from radiation, sunburn and much more. It’s also water-based.

So there you have it, those are all the afro hair products you need before going on holiday – and more importantly, you don’t have to spend an excessive amount to get them.
