Five Reasons why Afrocenchix has the Best Afro Hair Products

Finding the right afro hair products is a struggle. There are plenty of high street brands out there for women with straight hair, but very little for those of us with afro hair.

It doesn’t have to be so hard to find afro hair products that really work. At least, not with Afrocenchix.

In this blog, we’re going to share with you five reasons why our afro hair products are the best for black women.  (Of course we're biased!)

1. Completely Safe, Natural and Healthy

According to a study published in the Environmental Research Journal, over 78% of afro hair products marketed to black women contain chemicals linked to obesity, infertility and cancer. Many contain chemicals prohibited in the European Union (EU) and 84% of the chemicals within these products were not listed on the product’s label.

“Chemicals in hair products, and beauty products in general, are mostly untested and largely unregulated,” says Jessica Helm, PhD, a scientist at Silent Spring, “…this study is a first step towards uncovering what harmful substances are in products frequently used by black women,”.

This is why, at Afrocenchix, we provide black women with afro hair products that they can trust.

Our products are 97-100% natural. We don’t use parabens. We don’t use sulphates. We don’t phthalates and we don’t use artificial fragrances (just a few of the products you should avoid putting in your afro hair).

2. Suitable for Those with Allergies

Afro hair care products are full of allergens and while there are ‘all natural’ and ‘allergen free’ products, many contain chemicals that can irritate the skin on contact or exposure, such as:

Preservatives
These are the most common when it comes to allergic reactions in hair care products. Diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, DMDM hydantoin and quaternium-15 are just a few to avoid.

Fragrances
Often, ‘all natural’ and ‘allergen free’ products use an exclusive formula. However, as ingredients used are not listed, they can be dangerous to those with allergies.
Also, ‘fragrance-free’ and ‘unscented’ products sometimes use other chemicals to neutralise smell.

Botanicals
Mint, rosemary and tea tree oil can all contribute to and cause an allergic reaction.

Our products contain none of the above. As our co-founder, Rachael, is allergic to pretty much everything and our other co-founder, Joycelyn, has a sensitive nose, our afro hair products must be free from common allergens. We use high-quality natural ingredients and our customers say they smell fabulous.

Our co-founders create and use every product themselves, so you know it’s suitable for those with allergies and sensitive skin!

3. Environmentally Friendly

We believe that taking care of the environment is just as important as taking care of your hair, so we use completely recyclable packaging and organic ingredients wherever possible.

In addition:

  • Our afro hair products are vegan certified and never tested on animals
  • Our raw materials are ethically sourced
  • We use environmentally friendly preservatives

Lastly, we support Fairtrade. This ensures workers are paid a fair amount for what they produce and that the money is reinvested into their local community. You can find out more about why we support Fairtrade by clicking here.

4. An Accessible Option for Those With Afro Hair

“Walk down the aisles of your local supermarket or drugstore and you’ll find a huge selection of hair care products…” says Anna Schaverien, a Forbes contributor, “…but one glaring omission from the hair care shelves is a range of shampoos, conditioners, hair oils and more that are specifically designed to suit natural afro hair.”

The issue is that black women are often ignored when it comes to hair care. There are far more high street brands for those with straight and/or light hair.

At Afrocenchix, our mission isn’t just to create high-quality, allergen-free and healthy afro hair products, it’s also to increase the availability of afro hair products for black women. That's why we partner with Whole Foods and top independent health stores.

We serve customers worldwide and we're just about to launch a new subscription service, making it easier than ever for you to look after your afro hair.

5. Created By an Award-Winning Business Headed up by Experts

Our co-founders have worked tirelessly to produce high-quality products. Thanks to their hard work, Afrocenchix was voted the ‘Best Natural Hair Brand 2018’ at the Black Beauty and Fashion Awards, was the first afro hair product to be sold by Whole Foods UK and won a WeWork Global Creator Award from celebrity judges Diddy, Gary Lee, Kirsten Green & Ashton Kutcher.
