One question we’re often asked is “What are the best afro hair growth tips?” When women ask about afro hair growth tips, what they often mean is that they want tips on how to retain more length. Afro hair, like other hair types, grows at a rate of about half an inch every month. However, if more hair breaks off than grows, then it seems like growth just ain't happening.

There's no magic formula to accelerate hair growth but if you work towards having healthy hair, then length will follow. Here are 4 simple tips to help you achieve your hair growth goals.

1. Make sure your ends are in good shape.

There's no way to repair split ends so cutting them off is the best option. If you leave split ends for too long, they end up splitting further up the hair strand causing more damage. This will certainly hinder length retention. Trimming your hair won’t cause your hair to grow but getting rid of split ends is a good way to start your healthy hair journey.

2. Establish a routine.

As with anything, consistency breeds results. Creating a hair routine can help you achieve your hair growth goals. A good hair routine will consist of healthy hair practices that minimise breakage. Breakage is often caused by dry hair and frequent manipulation. A routine that incorporates regular washing and conditioning (every 7-10 days), maximises moisture and limits hair manipulation will help you to retain length.

3. Enter Serial Protective Style Mode

A protective style is any style that keeps the ends of your hair tucked away. Protective styles are great because they also reduce how much you manipulate your hair.  Many women find that consistently wearing protective styles such as twists, either with their own hair or with extensions, helps with retaining length.

For example, you may decide to follow a routine that involves washing and conditioning your hair, styling with twists, moisturising the twists throughout the week and then repeating these steps every 7-10 days. Or you could opt for braided or twisted extensions, keeping these styles in for 8 weeks at a time and then reinstalling.

4. Eat healthily

The nails and hair are the last parts of the body to be supplied with nutrients from the food we eat. That means if you don't have a healthy diet, even though you’ve followed the previous three steps, your hair may still be dry and brittle. Foods that are rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, iron, vitamins A, C and E are all good for healthy hair. It's also important that you stay hydrated!
