Why We Use Fairtrade, Organic Shea Butter

Selling Shea butter is an important source of income for women living in Bolgatanga, a poverty stricken area in Ghana. The Akoma Cooperative Society brings these women and others together in the shared pursuit of working their way out of poverty and raising awareness about ethical sourcing. All the shea butter you will find in Afrocenchix products is organic and fairtrade, from The Akoma Cooperative.

The fairtrade premium means that workers are paid a fair amount for what they produce. Money is also reinvested into the community with a focus on improving education, healthcare and respite for the elderly, allowing the whole village to benefit. Akoma is currently focused on renovating the Pusu-Namogo primary school, where the buildings are dilapidated and incomplete. Plans include building a library and IT centre as well as purchasing desks and school equipment.
