We spoke about natural hair being professional at our last #HairCare 101 event and watched a video clip in which Felicia Leatherwood, a natural hair stylist sometimes referred to as the Hair Whisperer, spoke about the importance of embracing our hair in its natural state. We absolutely love Felicia Leatherwood and all that she stands for.  She works with hair and not against it. Representation matters and it’s great that we are now starting to see more natural hair at glamorous occasions.

At Afrocenchix, we acknowledge that women reserve the right to wear their hair however they choose,  but at the same time, we want women to know that wearing their hair as it grows out of their scalp — be it coarse, thick, thin, gravity-defying, free-spirited etc. — is an option.

Can you relate to having to go to an event such as a wedding or job interview and needing to get your hair done? “Done” meaning getting it pressed/relaxed/hidden because your hair in its natural state is not considered professional or glamourous. We beg to differ; we are firm believers that if we are going to wear our hair natural we can wear it natural to all these fancy events and still feel beautiful. This is one of the reasons both Joycelyn and Rachael chose to rock their kinky textures on their wedding day.

Felicia has styled natural hair for celebrities going to glamorous occasions. She has worked with inspirational women such as Issa Rae, Teyonah Parris, Ava DuVernay, Yara Shahidi, Skai Jackson, Jill Scott and many more. Take a look below for some of our favourite styles she has created.

Only the best! Face always on point! And I love what she does with my hair! #naturalhairstylist #naturalhair
